New interpretations near Zürich

There are houses that were built for living in. And there are buildings whose original purpose was very different from their present-day use; take the home that the Swiss architect Enzo Rinaldi redesigned for a family of four, for example.

The home on Lake Zürich was once a swimming pool that was initially closed down and has now been converted by Rinaldi into a generous home with 700 square meters of living space. The Swiss architect has changed only the absolute essentials. The former swimming pool area continues to be the centerpoint of the house, so it is no great surprise to find a bulthaup b3 kitchen there, complete with dining area.

During the renovations, the pool was covered, a floor laid over it in durable Ipe wood, and a partition wall erected. The arched panoramic windows, the ceiling lights and the skylight, which allows the sunlight to flood the breakfast table in a morning, remained untouched.

The shape of the skylight served as the inspiration for the extractor hood in the bulthaup b3 kitchen, which is separated from the dining area by a partition wall and glass sliding doors. The front area of the kitchen is made up of the cooking island, complete with induction hob and bar counter. The rear area of the kitchen is used to prepare ingredients and for washing dishes. The division of the kitchen into two working areas was possible since it has a total area of 50 square meters and is very much appreciated by the owner. Thanks to numerous individually combinable bulthaup b3 elements, the kitchen's design is both functional and ergonomic, and brings both working areas together to form a visually appealing whole.

Despite a unit line spanning seven doors, the extra-large sink, the storage cupboards with a food center and wine cooler and the two double ovens, the sculptural bulthaup b3 character gives the room a lightness that is continued through into the dining area. This impression is accentuated by the indirect lighting, the cool stainless steel surfaces and the Alpine white laminate fronts that stand in delightful contrast to the warm wooden floor and bright-colored paintings on the walls of the dining area.

The owner and his family now spend most of their time in the dining area. And it's no real wonder, with its successful symbiosis of practical functionality and spacious yet cozy elegance.
