Relaxing at Lake Whitney in Texas

On the banks of Lake Whitney in Texas and immediately adjacent to a nature reserve, the Munoz family from nearby Dallas have fulfilled a dream. Here, multi-award winning architect Russell Buchanan has created a 200 square-meter house with three bedrooms, generous kitchen and living room areas and an extended glass front that gives onto the lake.

An interior architect herself, Kathleen Munoz had clear ideas about how she wanted her light-drenched weekend home to look: The kitchen, she decided, should be clearly recognizable as forming part of the living space.

Widespread use of the gray tones which predominate in the kitchen makes for transparency and continuity, while thanks to the centrally-sited bulthaup b3 kitchen island, Kathleen can be busy with the pots and pans while continuing to chat to her guests at the table or as they sit in a group around the fireplace. Most visitors, however, in particular the couple's two grown-up daughters, one of whom works for a New York gourmet magazine, find themselves drawn to the kitchen island. Forward thinking, this passionate cook of fresh, Mediterranean-style fare ensured that two water points were integrated into the kitchen. As a result everyone can get on with the preparation of their meal undisturbed.

Unlike most American kitchens, the one in the Munoz household is equipped with just one wall unit. The well thought-out distribution of the individual bulthaup elements creates enough space for kitchen utensils and provisions. "It was more important for us that the bright, light-looking character of the movable bulthaup system 20 elements should be retained rather than to have that destroyed by having a fixed row of units installed above them,” explains this expert in interiors, who also proved her sensitivity in the selection of colors and materials.

Gray anodized aluminum and stainless steel give the kitchen furnishings a certain lightness and offer a space onto which light entering through the large glass front and the gable window can project itself. This means that the look of the kitchen changes as the hours of the day pass. And it can sometimes happen that, at sunset, the Munoz's gaze falls not out onto the lake, but on the room around them. "That time of day is when the kitchen is at its most beautiful,” enthuses Kathleen. "That's when the fronts shimmer in a soft, amber tone”.
