Stylish in Budapest

On the far western edge of Budapest, in the hills of Buda, lies "Szép Juhászne” - the beautiful shepherdess - an area that is as romantic as its name suggests. It is here that a rigidly-divided house opens up from a wilderness of green, overgrown chalk cliffs and caves. Terraces on various levels stretch in all directions, offering a breathtaking view of the city center, which lies on the banks of the Danube further down the valley.

This is the house of Hubert Hlatky-Schlichter and his partner. Inside, the two gentlemen highlight their closeness to nature with travertine cladding, wooden panels and beautiful stone surfaces: "I like these unfinished structures,” says Hlatky-Schlichter, running his fingers over the veins and grooves that pervade the unpolished travertine.

As the owners of two popular sandwich bars, they are constantly working under pressure in order to satisfy even the most unusual requests. At home, they do only what they enjoy: Listening to music, swimming and most of all cooking - the way they like it - in their bulthaup b3 kitchen with shiny white fronts. The stools, covered with dark calfskin, make the workstation a communicative island - this is where they chat with guests and enjoy an aperitif in convivial company.

But the practical advantages are never far away: The central cooking island, with its work surface made from 10 mm-thick stainless steel, rests on six stainless steel feet and offers complete freedom of movement for the feet. "We chose bulthaup b3 because we were able to do everything just the way we wanted it - the length of the kitchen line, its surface, the units, everything stored perfectly, out of sight, but immediately to hand.” A brief touch is all that's needed and, as if operated by an invisible hand, the handle-free drawers and deep storage drawers open, revealing containers for kitchen utensils and spices.

The two bachelors enjoy cooking dishes from all over the world on their stove with its deep ring for the wok. Sometimes, the fresh scent of green lemongrass wafts through the kitchen, then the fruity and sweet aroma of juicy mango. Yet despite all this exclusive taste, the friendly householders remain true to their roots. Their favorite cooking pastime is a traditional to the last: "Stuffed cabbage - our national dish!”
