Authentic in Amsterdam

Traditional and modern, business and art, small-town coziness and cosmopolitan flair - Amsterdam is a city full of exciting contrasts. It is on this backdrop that the renowned architect Annabelle Selldorf has now renovated a city house, deploying her characteristic sensitivity when it comes to working with historic buildings. Selldorf has paid particular attention to the kitchen. According to her, she wants to create a kitchen that people are happy to hang around in. Her goal is to create an additional space for living that is highly appreciated.

To begin with, turning this idea into reality appeared to be a somewhat complex affair. The room was highly fragmented, with high window fronts making it impossible to use wall units and tall units. Following intensive discussions with the client, a Dutch art collector who lives mainly in Paris, the choice finally fell in favor of bulthaup b3. The reason for this was that the missing overhead elements could be replaced with system bulthaup b3 functional boxes. These boxes offer adequate space for kitchen essentials such as spices, work boards or knives. In terms of design, material and functionality, the system corresponds beautifully to Selldorf's esthetic understanding. She believes there are strong parallels between her own work and the kitchen's minimalist and authentic characteristics.

The old property, however, turned out to be a challenge in other ways too. This is because the Selldorf name is synonymous with the respectful treatment of historic buildings and their accomplished modernization. Consequently, as much as possible was retained or restored to its original condition: The tiles were re-laid, but in the old look; the windows were renovated and painted, but the old glass was reused.

system bulthaup b3 with fronts made from gray aluminum created a deliberately modern contrast to the older materials. The ten-millimeter-thick, shimmering worktops made from white synthetic stone stretch right up to the windowsill. The fronts and worktop also pick up the colors of the floor tiles. The result is that the kitchen architecture blends in beautifully and harmoniously with the room.

A small dining area comprising a c3 table, a c3 bench in oak and a Wegner chair complete this Amsterdam kitchen. Ultimately, says Annabelle Selldorf, a bulthaup kitchen is the sum of quality of life plus a sense of community.
